I wrote a friend right after watching this video (linked from the image below) the day after the scene had played in the evening news, that “If this is what it means to be a Christian, I’m in.” I followed that, of course, with “I know this is a conditional sentence.”

We see Brandt Jean (only 18 years old) speak at the closing, sentence-setting part of the trial of police officer Amber Guyger for the murder of his brother Botham Jean on October 2, 2019. Here is a link to an NPR collection of stories on the case: link.

The wide-reaching, deep-wrenching moral-spiritual ramifications of this case are partly implicit in the witness-murder story that appears this morning as I write this up. I’m thinking the unknown killers were most likely also Christians. Brandt Jean is a remarkable, exemplary and deeply decent human being.
